2012 BWF World Rankings up to July 5

Jung Jae Sung-Lee Yong Dae

The world’s top men’s doubles pair, Jung Jae Sung / Lee Yong Dae, have had reason to celebrate time and again this year

World No. 1 spots coveted by many change hands

June was the start of a new badminton era; Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia, world number 1 for quite a while, was injured in the final of the Thomas Cup in May and was unable to complete in the Indonesian Super Series in June.

Lee won the tournament last year and his absence this year meant that the number of ranking points he has won fell. China’s No. 1 men’s singles player Lin Dan replaced Lee in No.1 spot in the men’s singles world rankings.

In the men’s doubles world rankings, all that seems to have taken place is that first and second have exchanged places, but this change is extremely significant for players and fans alike. Korea’s top men’s pair, Jung Jae Sung / Lee Yong Dae, have been close to previously top-ranked pair, China’s Fu Hai Feng / Cai Yun, for a while, and scored an impressive victory against the Chinese pair at the All England Super Series in March this year to take the title.

Fancied by many as medal winners at the London Olympics, with their main threat Fu / Cai absent from the Indonesian Open, the Korean’s took the title and also moved into first place in the world rankings.

In the women’s singles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles disciplines, China’s Wang Yi Han, Wang Xiao Li/ Yu Yang and Zhang Nan/Zhao Yun stayed at the top of the rankings.

Chen Hung Ling-Cheng Wen Hsing

Singapore Super Series mixed doubles winners, Chinese Taipei’s Chen Hung Ling / Cheng Wen Hsing

Chinese Taipei players lived up to expectations at the June Singapore Super Series, bagging one first place and two seconds!

On the last day of the Singapore Super Series, Chinese Taipei’s Cheng Shao Chieh in the women’s singles, Cheng Wen Hsing / Chien Yu Chin in the women’s doubles and Cheng Wen Hsing / Chen Hung Ling in the mixed doubles all reached the final. Facing Japan’s top pair Shintaro Ikeda / Reiko Shiota the final of the mixed doubles, affected by the pressure, Cheng Wen Hsing made a series of service errors at the start of the match. Fortunately her substantial experience of international competition allowed her to calm down and play better; she was able put the Japanese pair under constant pressure with successive high speed flat drives and, with Chen providing fire support in the form of powerful smashes from the back of the court, the Chinese Taipei pair were able to brush the Japanese aside and take home the trophy.

With the biggest event on the world badminton calendar just around the corner all the members of the Chinese Taipei team are intensifying training with the aim of doing well at the Olympics.
