Chinese Taipei’s 18 year old Tai Tzu Ying showed great resilience under pressure and actually saved three match points in the deciding game to see off her opponent  21:19, 20:22, 22:20 in a close-fought match, taking the women’s singles title at the Taipei Open. Vietnamese star Nguyen Tien Minh beat Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen to take the men’s single title.

In the men’s singles final Nguyen Tien Minh put in a first-class performance against Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen. Nguyen Tien Minh successfully eliminated the threat from Chou’s outstanding ability to attack from the rear of the court, taking the match 21:11, 21:17.

 

Tai  faced Lindaweni Fanetri of Indonesia in the final a player whose styles involves hitting the shuttlecock all over the court and attacking using various basic shots .

Before the match Tai had readied herself for a tough battle, however, cheered on loudly by her home crowd, she was slow to get into her stride and also banged her knee slightly at the start of the first game, affecting her movement around the court slightly.

The first two games were closely fought, each player taking one game, setting them up for a deciding third game. In the latter part of the third game Tai surprisingly made several unforced errors in succession and, down 17:20, was in danger of losing the match. Unable to lose even one point she focused on making every shot count and showed great skill to take five points in a row and take the game and match, leaving the crowd wild with delight.

After the match Tai said that her opponent’s height was a big threat and many of her shots to the back of the court weren’t high enough and were intercepted by her opponent, leaving her at full stretch to make return shots from close to the ground throughout the game.

Tai’s father was in the audience and, showing great confidence in his daughter, said that even when she faced three match point he believed she could pull through. Her mother, however, was so nervous she couldn’t watch and actually wanted to leave the hall for some fresh air. She was held back by her husband though, ensuring that mother and father were present to witness their daughter’s moment of triumph.
