2012 BWF World Ranking up to November 8

Looking at the BWF world rankings released on November 8, we can see that a quiet revolution is taking place in international badminton.

At the Chinese Taipei Open, Denmark Open Premium Super Series and French Open Super Series tournaments a number of new-generation players or new pairings have excelled. The points they have amassed have brought big changes to the world rankings.

The top ranked players in the five disciplines are respectively: Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei in the men’s singles, China’s Wang Yi Han in the women’s singles, Denmark’s Mogensen / Boe in the men’s doubles, China’s Tian Qing / Zhao Yun Lei in the women’s doubles and China’s Xu Zhen / Ma Jin in the mixed doubles.

Denmark Premier Super Series :Yoo Yeon Seong / Shin Baek Choel take the title at their first Super Series outing

A the Denmark Premier Super Series South Korea’s new men’s doubles pair Yoo Yeon Seong / Shin Baek Choel swept away the challenge of a series of tough opponents on their way to the final. In the final, they faced Malaysia’s Koo Kien Keat / Tan Boon Heong.

The South Korea’s lost the first game but quickly got into their groove and, relying on fast block shots to create attacking opportunities and lethal smashes, took the second game to level the match. The third game was closely fought and the scores were close throughout but, in the end, the South Koreans withstood the pressure and gave the Malaysian pair the coup de grace with a fine shot to take the match.

This was the first time the pair have competed in a Super Series tournament since they began playing together and their victory at the first attempt can be described as highly significant !

In the quarter finals Lee / Ko defeated Malaysia’s Koo Kien Keat / Tan Boon Heong, taking their revenge against the pair who had taken their scalps the previous week at the Denmark Open.

In the semi-final, they beat their countrymen Kim Ki Jung  / Kim Sa Rang. They then faced Thailand’s Maneepong Jongjit / Bodin Issara in the final and took the match 22:24, 21:17, and 21:11.

Following the retirement of Jung Jae Sung,Lee / Ko will probably become South Korea’s top men’s doubles pair so their victory at the French Open signaled their arrival on the world badminton stage.

The South Korean team has always been known for the strength of its men’s doubles pairing and, at present, there are three South Korean pairs in the world top 10 (second ranked Jung Jae Sung / Lee Yong Dae, third ranked Ko Sung hyun / Yoo Yeon Seong and seventh ranked Kim Ki Jung  / Kim Sa Rang).
